Face the Facts
Did you know that 388,000 people die of AIDS in East Africa annually? Thats equal to 1,063 people everyday! More than an Airbus A380 at full capacity, crash-landing atop Mt Kilimanjaro daily killing everybody on board .Sadly majority
of these deaths occur among fishing communities.

Jaboya is a project of the Environment Liaison Center International (ELCI). ELCI based at ICIPE Campus, Nairobi Kenya.

About ELCI

Environment Liaison Center International (ELCI) is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) with a vision of "Enlightening societies in ecological abundance " and core mandate of "Using information to measurably improve the environment". ELCI was established immediately upon creation of UNEP in Nairobi in 1973-74, to be the Civil Society interface with UNEP and bring Civil Society competence to the intergovernmental environmental table. Recently, ELCI has been visible and useful in the intergovernmental environmetal context of the UNCBD and UNCSD.

In addition, ELCI has fostered, sponsored and/or managed replicable programmes of Civil Society in the areas of Desertification, Health and Environment, poverty Environmental Law, Organic Agriculture, all of these with a focus on Africa, notably East Africa.

ELCI is governed by an internation boards of directors, elected every three years. Over time, ELCI has become engaged in several hands on campaigns and programmes with national or regional focus, rather than solely international.


Local and Southern Regional Programmes Currently Implemented
  • Production of Ecoforum, a regional environment and development magazine that has won national and international prizes
  • Environmental Law program aimed at empowering Kenyans citizen to exercise their rights under environment legislation in Kenya
  • Forest Certification working to build the capacity of East African countries to embrace forest certification as a means of bringing about Sustainable Forest Management through showcasing best practices in development and exploitation of forests and forest products in line with standards of Forest Steward Council.
  • Kenya Organic Agriculture Network concerned with coordinating, facilitating and providing leadership and professional services to all members and stakeholders in the areas of production, training, marketing certification and lobbyimg and promoting the organic movement in Kenya
  • Environmental Health Programme within which we have Unleaded fuel Campaign and the Jaboya Project. This programme is concerned with sustainable and clean production and consumption and gives perspective to environmental and sustainable development matters.

Tanzania & Uganda Fisheries & Fish Conservation Association.
